Democratic Left (Ecuador)
The Democratic Left (Spanish: ''Izquierda Democrática'', ID) is a social-democratic political party in Ecuador. At the legislative elections, held on 20 October 2002, the party won at least 13 out of 100 seats. Its candidate Rodrigo Borja, who was president of Ecuador from 1988 to 1992, won 14.4% of the vote in the presidential elections of the same day. For the October 2006 elections, it has entered into an alliance with the Ethics and Democracy Network (Red Etica y Democracia), to support the ticket formed by former Vice-President León Roldós, and Ramiro González, former Prefect of the Pichincha Canton. The party won 13 seats in Congress again, while its presidential ticket came in fourth place. In April 2022 the party had thirteen members in the National Assembly after it excluded Johanna Moreira from the party. Rodrigo Borja Cevallos
Rodrigo Borja Cevallos (born 19 June 1935) is an Ecuadorian politician who was President of Ecuador from 10 August 1988 to 10 August 1992. He is also a descendant of the House of Borgia. Life Borja was born in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. He helped to found the Party of the Democratic Left, a socialist political party which quickly gained strength. He served several terms in Congress, leaving it in 1982. Borja first ran for President of Ecuador in 1978, coming in fourth place. He again ran for president in 1984, receiving the most votes in the first round, 36%, but he was defeated in the runoff. He succeeded in winning the 1988 presidential election. He focused on Ecuador's economic problems during his presidency, and he increased collaboration with other countries in the Americas. He spent time with U.S. President George H. W. Otto Ramón Sonnenholzner Sper (, locally , ; born 19 March 1983) is an Ecuadorian radio broadcaster, politician, and economist who served as the 50th Vice President of Ecuador from December 2018 to July 2020. Biography Otto was born in Guayaquil on March 19, 1983, to father Ramón Sonnenholzner and mother Rosa Elena Sper. After studying social sciences, communication and international economics in Ecuador, Germany, and Spain, he became speaker and general manager of Tropicana radio, then president of the Ecuadorian Association of broadcasting (AER). He teaches at the University of Guayaquil. He has three children with his wife, Claudia Salem Barakat. After the resignation of María Alejandra Vicuña in December 2018, and at the proposal of President Lenín Moreno, the National Assembly of Ecuador entrusted him with the office of vice-president. 2023 Ecuadorian General Election
Snap general elections were held in Ecuador on 20 August 2023 to vote for President of Ecuador, members of the National Assembly and two referendums. Elections followed the invocation of , which dissolved the National Assembly on 17 May 2023. A run-off election was held on 15 October 2023 to elect the President after candidates were unable to reach the threshold needed to win in the first round. Incumbent president Guillermo Lasso was eligible for a second term, but he announced on 18 May that he would not stand for re-election in response to his impeachment. Johanna Nicole Moreira Cordova (born 1996) is a member of the National Assembly of Ecuador. She was a member of the Democratic Left party and she represents the province of El Oro. In 2021 when she was elected she was the youngest member of the assembly. She took the privileged place of fourth position on the Legislative Administration Council in 2021. Life Moreira studied law at the Technical University of Machala before starting to practise at the Alfaro Law Firm in Machala. She became a member of the Democratic Left party and she was their candidate for the province of El Oro. In 2021 when she was elected she was the youngest member of the National Assembly of Ecuador. León Roldós Aguilera
León Roldós Aguilera (born 21 July 1942) is an Ecuadorian politician. He was born in Guayaquil in 1942. His mother died during his birth. He studied law at the state University of Guayaquil. He became secretary of the Municipality of Guayaquil under Mayor Assad Bucaram (his brother's father in law), of the populist party Concentración de Fuerzas Populares. He also had a private practice of law and consultancy mostly to the banking sector. He later became a professor in the University of Guayaquil and a dean of the law school of the Universidad Laica Vicente Rocafuerte. In 1979, his brother Jaime Roldós was elected president in a ticket representing the alliance between Concentración de Fuerzas Populares and the Christian Democrat Party Democracia Popular. Ethics And Democracy Network
The Ethics and Democracy Network (Spanish ''Red Ética y Democracia'', RED) was a centre-left political party in Ecuador. It was formed by labour union leaders and other leftist militants, led by León Roldós, former vice-president and brother of former president Jaime Roldós, who came from the Ecuadorian Socialist Party. For the October 2006 elections, RED entered into an alliance with the Democratic Left party, to support the candidacy of León Roldós and running mate Ramiro González, former Prefect of the Pichincha Province. The alliance's presidential ticket came in fourth place with 14.8% of the votes, while RED won 5 of 100 seats in Congress.
